Show posts different distances away from the viewer. Note that closer posts are drawn larger with thicker strokes and farther posts are drawn smaller with lighter strokes. Also note that the tops of all posts touch the horizon line.

The instructor demonstrates drawing a single post and directs children to copy the drawing.

  1. Use a soft pencil with a blunt point.
  2. Make the lines heavy.
  3. Sketch the sides and a rounded top of the post.
  4. Add a little shading at the bottom and the sides.
  5. Draw a little grass around the post, which serves as the rest line.
  6. Have children practice drawing their own posts, until they master it.

Complete the following drill exercises, using the lesson drawing as a reference. The instructor demonstrates each drawing and directs children to copy the drawings. Children should practice these drawings over the week.

  1. Using a horizon line, draw 3 posts various distances away.
  2. Using a horizon line, draw 5 posts various distances away.
  3. Using a horizon line, draw 6 posts various distances away.
  4. Using a horizon line, draw 10 posts various distances away. Add an item, such as an apple, sitting atop 1 of the posts.
  5. Using a horizon line, draw 11 posts various distances away. Add items, such as birds, sitting atop 2 of the posts.
